The Free Tier Is Not Free

Every conversation you have with an AI system is training the model that is replacing your job.

What 'Free' Actually Means

When a product is free, you are the product. This is not a metaphor. It is the literal business model. OpenAI, Google, Meta, and xAI offer free or subsidized access to their AI systems because every interaction you have with those systems makes the model more valuable — and the model is what they sell.

The Three-Stage Extraction Engine

Phase 1 — The Original Scrape: Every book, article, forum post, academic paper, and piece of human expression posted online was scraped without consent or compensation to train the foundation models. Phase 2 — The Ongoing Harvest: Every question you ask, every document you upload, every conversation you have with an AI system is fed back into the model. You are not the customer. You are the raw material. Phase 3 — The Platform Capture: Grok trains on every post on X/Twitter. Meta's models on every Facebook comment. Google's on every website and email. These are not side effects. They are the business model.

What You Can Do Right Now

Step 1: Go to your AI platform's settings and find the data training opt-out. It is buried — usually under Privacy > Data Controls > Model Training. Opt out. Step 2: Understand that opting out only affects future data — your historical interactions are already in the model. Step 3: Support the AI Power Dividend Act, which creates the first legally enforceable mechanism for communities to reclaim a share of the value extracted from them.
